Pour your Art out with Kay Halliwell-sutton and the BluBirds

Hello to you on such a wet and windy afternoon. Because its not nice out I decided it was the craft room for me and thought I would do a quick blog post to share with you with lots of photos and a couple of quick tutorials.


As you may have seen a couple of weeks ago, Kay shared with us on Hochanda another way to use the IndigoBlu Acrylic paints for Paint Pouring. If you ordered from her show you might be pleased to have a couple tips to inspire you to open those bottles and have a go! I have to say this is one of my favourite ways of using paint.










Kay has mixed up the paints with the Go-Flow pouring meduim along with a few drops of Cell-U-like and added each colour along with white paint to create a 'Dirty Cup'.




The cup of paint was then poured onto the prepared canvas set inside a foil tray to catch the excess paint from the pour.







With this pour Kay made little circle movements when pouring the paint from the cup, then tipped the canvas backwards and forwards until the paint covered all the canvas.




After a quick blast from the blow torch, more cells came to the surface and any bubbles were popped.




Kay then went on to show us that you can also do Pours over other objects like this bowl using the same method as above.




Below are some Video's I have made to take you through the first steps of Paint Pouring and mixing of the Paints and some easy fun techniques. The 2nd video shows you some different ways to do pours. I hope that they are helpful and you enjoy them.

Fellow Blubird Emma and I have put together a couple of quick tutorials for you to have a go out.

Emma Blake 1.To start with I used tiger Lilly, indigoblu, stroke of midnight and white paint.

2.I mixed up my colours using the 1:2 ratio and added a little water to thin the mixture down, I then added a couple of drops of the cell u like to the tiger Lilly and stroke of midnight.


3. I then poured each colour diagonally across the canvas.


4. Using a credit card I then made a wavy diagonal movement following the lines of paint.







5. I left the paint for a few moments to let the cells develop and went over with a blow torch and watched the rest of the cells pop up.


6. I then left the canvas on a flat surface to dry out. Its very important to make sure you do this.









Sue Ralph Quick Tutorial- Tree Ring Acrylic Pour




1. To do this type of pour, mix up your chosen paint colours (I used Aladdin, Welsh Slate, Olive Waistcoat and Lime Marmalade) and white GeeSoo Good with the Go Flow and a few drops of Cell-U-Like in the coloured paint in single cups then layer up the colours along with white in a separate cup to create a Dirty Pour Cup.


2. I choose to use a round Artboard with a stand for this Pour. I gave the artboard a couple of coats of white GeeSoo one side and when dry I used Masking tape to cover the back and the bottom part where it slots into the base so I could remove the tape and drips once the pour was dry.




3. Lay the artboard, without the stand on a cup in the foil container. Using the Dirty Pour Cup pinch one side of the cup together to create a spout to pour from. Using small circular movements, start pouring the paint into the middle of the board. Keep moving the cup in the same position and hand movement until the cup is empty or the artboard is covered.




4. Use a blow torch at this stage to pop any bubbles and to bring up more cells.


5. If you want to stretch out the rings gently tip the artboard in different directions. Now leave to dry out for a few days.


6. Once dry, take off the masking tape from the back of the artboard and paint that and the stand with white GeeSoo.


7. Leave to dry paint the stand and back of the board with Aladdin Paint. Now slot the two pieces together.


8. Wipe off any residue cell-u-like that has come to the surface of the pour, then Varnish to seal and protect your creation plus it also brightens up the colours again.

Snow White

Snow White is paying us a visit today, as she wanders through her Snowy Forest. 

I recycled the chipboard backing from a 12 x 9 paper pad, into a canvas. I brushed some gesso over it followed by a coating of the gorgeous Stroke Of Midnight paint. I filled my brush with Pantry White paint and tapped the brush so the paint sprinkled over the canvas to give a snowing affect. Be warned the paint sprinkles can go everywhere, but it is lots of fun!

My inspiration for this picture was the Snow White  in the Sparkle and Glisten stencil. Which I of  course used with the Snow White metallic paint ! There is a lovely large snowflake in the Alternative Christmas Stamp set. I used a sponge to dab some Pantry White paint onto it and stamped it around the edges of my canvas. 

I sponged Olive Waistcoat onto card before white heat embossing the trees from the new Tree Dressing Stamp set. After fussy cutting them I adhered them to the canvas. This Stamp set also comes with three sizes of stars, which I heat embossed in red and then  filled the centres with Unicorn Sparkles. After cutting them out I popped the sparkling stars onto the trees.

I roughly sketched Snow White. After painting and fussy cutting her, I added a red ribbon and bow to her hair. I used a scrap of red net to make her a cape. I placed Snow White on the canvas so she could watch over the forest.

To finish I used some  texture paste and Unicorn Sparkles for snow sitting under the trees.

 A smaller version of this canvas could also work well as a card.

Snowy Feathers

Hello Jannet here today, have you started thinking about creating your Christmas/Winter cards and gifts yet? I have actually made one gift already which is for my parents. This Snowy Feathers  plaque, which features the lovely Robin. For once I was quite happy with how it turned  out, so I thought it might look nice as a card too.

I started by creating a background by using a brayer to apply Stonewashed and Terracotta Adirondack inks. and then spritzed over them with water.

The Robin stamped very nicely onto Watercolour card, and I used Watercolours to give him his famous red breast. I then fussy cut him, no feathers were harmed!

I found a comfortable looking twig for the Robin to happily sit on. I dabbed on some fine modelling paste and then shook some Unicorn Sparkles over it to create the glistening snow.

I stamped the Night before Christmas stamp from the Sparkle and Glisten Stamp Set onto the background. To create the icicles I applied a thick line of glossy accents to the top of the card and then stood the card up so it dripped nicely down, I then shook Unicorn Sparkles over the top.

Indigoblu Robin

I adhered the Robin onto the twig and attached the twig to the background. I added some dried moss  a pine cone and a festive red berry.

I finished by flittering white paint over the picture to create falling snow.

Hello Jannet here today, I hope everyone is having lots of fun with their Indigoblu goodies. Are you going to Ally Pally on 8th & 9th April it should be a wonderful crafty day out!

Whenever I am creating a little crafty project, I can't seem to help making up a story to go with it! So I am delighted that this month we have been asked to create a story!

Different

There once was a lovely young lady, who was a little different from all of the other girls her age.She was kind and thoughtful, but she just didn't seem to fit in.

One sunny spring afternoon she was sitting alone in the forest, trying very hard not to weep. When suddenly.... she heard a twinkling sound. She looked up, but at first she couldn't see anything making the magical sound. Then she turned her head a little to the right, and smiling over at her was the most beautiful Unicorn! She rubbed her eyes in disbelief, but he really was real !

"Hello" he said in a friendly Unicorn sort of a way. "Could you please help me " asked the Unicorn "I think I am lost, and I can't see any other Unicorns around."I am feeling a bit scared a.n.d...well lonely"

"Where do you want to go ?" asked the young lady smiling.

"I'm not sure" replied the Unicorn "Somewhere I won't feel different I just want to fit in, and be loved" replied the Unicorn.

The young lady wheeled over to the Unicorn and reached up and wrapped her arms around him.She held him as tightly as she could and the Unicorn sighed a deep and happy sigh.

"You can come home with me"she whispered, "I will love you forever, and look after you."

"And I you." replied the Unicorn.

If you ever see a trail of sparkles anywhere you can be sure the young lady and her Unicorn were there!

I started creating my picture by stamping Caitlin onto some watercolour paper, and then stamping her again on some masking paper.I cut her out of the masking paper and placed her over the top of her corresponding image on the watercolour paper.

Next I stamped Jewel the lovely Unicorn over the top of Caitlin, after removing the mask he appears as if he is behind her.

I painted in some cloudy skies and spring grass. I added some colour to Jewel with watercolours, and of course I added the all important Unicorn Sparkles to his mane!

To create the tree branches I used some fine texture paste, and when dry I painted over them.You can also mix acrylic paint into your texture paste before applying. The branches needed some spring blossom, so I painted a piece of card with iced gem paint and a random sprinkling of Raspberry Luscious.

Which created many differing shades of shimmering pink.

I die cut lots of little flowers from the card. To add some shape to each flower I placed it over the top of my paint brush and cupped it around it.

Some flowers needed a little more colour, and I added a dot to the centre.I adhered each flower onto the branches.

Family Canvas

Hello and welcome, Kay M here to share the canvas I made for this month's seasonal theme of bonfires and fireworks.   

November has a few annual family gatherings involving food, bonfires and fireworks and where there's a gathering there's the group photo!   I've used one from the  Lost Family paper stack as the main image.

A 20cm x 25cm canvas was painted with Gee-Sso-Good black, when dry,  a Sleeping Beauty wash was painted over and more black sponged around the edges to frame the canvas.

Unicorn Sparkles was mixed with Super Thick Slap-It-On and used through the Starburst Stencil three times on the canvas and left to dry.   Pink Luscious was then added to the mixture and this was used through the Weird Science Stencil into the centre of the Starbursts.  This same mix was watered down and splattered over the canvas,  when dry,  white paint splatters and lines were added.

The elements were prepared. 
I used fine texture paste through the Laurel stencil and fussy cut them out when dry, they were painted with a Emerald City and Pheasant Bronze mix and then dusted with Gold Luscious.   Wooden sentiments were painted with Gee-Sso-Good black then dry brushed with Vodka Martini and a little Hot Cocoa and backed with white card.   The family were fussy cut and a black pen run over the cut edges. 

To finish, the family group was attached with silicon glue and the laurel leaves adhered horizontally behind and in front of them.  The sentiments placed as shown.

I love how the Unicorn Sparkles work with the Starburst stencil to look like an exploding firework.  I do hope you have enjoyed this canvas.

Winter Wonderland

Hello, Kay M here with a festive winter scene using the gorgeous Winterland Wood tree and delightful angel from Peace on Earth.

I spread fine paste over a 8" canvas board and gave it texture by using the scratchy part of a washing up sponge on it vertically before it dried. Emerald City, Miss Moneypenny and Pheasant Bronze Metallic paints were mixed together to give the green I wanted and then applied it to a piece of Phat foam and this used to 'ink ' up and stamp the tree repeatedly across the centre of the board and on to white card, these ones were cut out.

Unicorn Sparkles were mixed into Super Thick Slap-it-On and this was used through the Star stencil above the tree line and in patches to look like snow drifts below. When dry the board was spritzed with water and silver and blue Luscious sprinkled above the trees and moved round with a wet paintbrush. The same method was applied below the trees using silver and green Luscious.

The angel was stamped with FlitterGlu and Stainless Steel Mega Flakes applied and then over stamped with StazOn ink and fussy cut. The sentiments are from The Spirit of Christmas stencil, VersaFine black ink was sponged through and then the Unicorn Sparkles and Super Thick Slap-it-On mixture applied on top and cut out when dry. The angel and sentiments were adhered with silicon glue to the board as shown.

The Spirit of Christmas

Good morning it's Elizabeth here with a project made using the gorgeous new Winterland Wood stamps.

I started by stamping out the large tree from the set, using peeled paint Distress Ink as I wanted a watercolour feel to my project..

Then on a piece of white card 7 1/2" square I used Super Thick Slap It On through the Star Stencil dried it with my heat gun and then gave it a light colour wash of diluted Grandma's Teacup and Peppermint Tea Cottage Garden paint. The Super Thick creates a resist against the paint, so the stars pop through.

On a scrap piece of white card I stencilled again using the Super Thick Slap It On through the Spirit of Christmas stencil and gave that a colour wash of Grandma's Teacup paint before cutting it out.

I fussy cut the tree's out and added some of the gorgeous Unicorn Sparkles for snowy branches.

 
After distressing the edge of my background I added it to an 8" square card blank, and positioned the tree's across the centre.

I added torn strips of  Muslin across the bottom of the card to create some texture and then painted the the edges with some diluted Luscious Powder letting the colours run into the card behind. I also added more colour to the base of the tree's to ground them.

I finished off by adding the sentiment, some sequins and of course a little splattering of white GeeSsoGood.

I hope you enjoyed the project, don't forget to try adding luscious over the top of your paint and inks for another look.
